How to Look After Cloth Nappies

Using modern cloth is so much easier than the way that caring for cloth nappies used to be when our parents used them. If you follow our simple steps, you will find that you have beautiful nappies for longer.

We always pre-wash our fabrics before we sew with them, but recommend that you pre-wash your nappies twice before you wash them. This will get the bamboo pads to their full absorbency. We also recommend that you be wary that your new nappies will need time to be broken in, and the first couple of that your baby uses them they may be less absorbent. This is because bamboo becomes more absorbent the more you wash it.

1. Rinse solid waste - to make sure your nappies stay beautiful and soft and to keep your washing machine free from clogging, we recommend rinsing any solid waste down the toilet before putting them aside for washing.

2. No Soaking, Dry Pail - "Dry Pailing" is the new way of putting your nappies aside for washing as there is no reason for soaking your nappies due to the antibacterial qualities of bamboo. After you rinse your nappies, simply just put them in a bucket with a tight fitting lid to await washing.

3. 1/2 a scoop of detergent - You only need 1/2 a scoop of detergent to wash your cloth nappies as too much detergent will clog your nappies making them less absorbent. We also recommend not using softener in your nappy load, as it also clogs your absorbent fibers, and not using bleach or napisan as it will ruin the fabrics used in our nappies. We always recommend using a longer wash cycle, no hotter than 60 degrees, and doing a good rinse at the end of the cycle to remove all traces of detergent. If you can use a chemical free, PH balanced detergent or a natural detergent on your nappies it is a preferable choice.

4. How you dry is up to you - To lengthen the life of your nappies, we recommend drying your nappies on the line, but using a tumble dryer is fine as long as it is on the cool or delicate setting.

So now that you know how to look after your nappies, all that is left is for you to enjoy using them on your baby. If you have any questions, contact us via the contact form.
